Andalusite is a naturally occuring alumina-silicate, which is used in the manufacture of various refractory products. Final users of andalusite products are primarily the iron and steel industries.
Refractory grade bauxite is calcined at over 1500 degrees Celsius in order to create a dense and pure aggregate, which exhibitis high refractoriness due to its relatively high alumina content.
Chromesand is one of the main components of molding sands in foundries. However, it is also an important raw material for the refractory industry, for the manufacturing of chromemagnesite- and magnesiachrome-bricks and –monolithics.
This mineral belongs to the group of alumina-silicates. Due to its relatively moderate price levels it tends to be a suitable raw material for refractory applications meant to withstand only low- to mid-range temperatures.
Also commonly referred to as MgO or magnesum oxide, it is an important raw material for the production of refractory linings for steel ladles, converters and other such aggregates. Magnesite is supplied in sintered (dead-burned), fused or caustic form.
This raw material is non-reactive and versatile, which makes it suitable for a wide range of uses in refractories. Next to good thermal shock resistance it also displays good heat conductivity and enhances the wetting.
Through a process of reduction in the electric arc furnace of bauxite or aluminium oxide, corundum is produced. Fused alumina, among other applications, finds use in the production of various high-quality refractory products. The large consuming industries of fused alumina are iron and steel production.
Metallurgical fluorspar is used in the production of stainless steel and as slag conditioner. Of primary importance for the quality of this product is a relatively high content of calcium fluoride (CaF2) and as low a level of impurities as possible.
